Deadbolts: Length, Strength, & Frame Security

24/7 SERVICE: 212-780-0144

The deadbolt is the most widespread, trusted style of door lock in existence, and for good reason: it simply works.

Unlike standard spring-latch locks that can be shimmied or bypassed with a simple plastic card, a deadbolt locks a movable component (your door) directly into an immovable one (your building frame) using a solid, impenetrable shaft of metal.

Understanding what makes a deadbolt secure comes down to three crucial factors: bolt length, steel strength, and frame attachment.

1. Bolt Penetration & Length: The Power of Physics

Much of a deadbolt‘s holding power comes down to fundamental physics. When force is applied to a door during a kick-in attempt, the pressure required to shear the metal bolt or split the surrounding wood jamb increases dramatically in proportion to how deep the bolt is embedded into the wall.

A standard high-security deadbolt features a full 1-inch throw bolt. Extending the bolt a full inch past the strike plate spreads kinetic impact force across a significantly thicker section of the wall stud or steel door frame, making it exponentially harder to break through than shallow half-inch latches.

2. Steel Metallurgy: Why Carbon Content & Tempering Matter

Not all steel bolts are created equal. If a deadbolt’s inner shaft is made of soft or untreated metal, an intruder can quietly saw through it using a hand-held hacksaw or power tool.

To resist cutting, drill bits, and physical shearing, top-tier deadbolt bolts are manufactured using specialized heat-treated carbon steel alloys.

Carbon Steel & Crystalline Hardening

  • Carbon Blend: Iron ore is smelted with a precise ratio of carbon (typically 0.4% to 1%). When heated above a critical temperature, the carbon molecules mix uniformly with the iron to form iron carbide.

  • Rapid Cooling (Quenching): Dipping the molten metal into water or oil forces it into an extremely hard crystalline structure.

  • Tempering for Toughness: Hardened steel can become brittle on its own. Reheating the steel (between 450°F and 1,350°F) removes brittleness while maintaining core tensile strength—resulting in a bolt shaft that won’t snap under impact or yield to saw blades.

  • Alloy Upgrades: Leading manufacturers like Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and Schlage reinforce steel shafts with trace elements of titanium, chromium, manganese, and nickel, alongside hardened steel anti-saw roller pins inside the bolt.

3. Frame Attachment: Anchoring the Strike Plate

A heavy-duty, hardened steel bolt is useless if the strike plate holding it tears away from the wall on the first impact.

Most kick-in burglaries don’t fail at the lock itself—they fail because the strike plate was attached to thin decorative wood trim using tiny 3/4-inch screws.

  • 3-Inch Steel Screws: Always anchor strike plates using 3-inch hardened screws. These pass through the superficial door jamb and bite deep into the 2×4 wooden studs or steel framing members behind the wall.

  • Reinforced Box Strike Plates: Upgrading to a full box strike plate (a steel cup wrapped around the bolt opening) adds an additional layer of steel between the bolt and the frame.

4. Specialized Deadbolts: Vertical Pins & Double Doors

While standard deadbolts slide horizontally, certain door configurations require alternate locking geometry to resist forced separation.

  • Vertical Interlocking Deadbolts (Jimmy-Proof Locks): Popular across NYC apartments and brownstones, these locks utilize vertical brass or steel pins that slide downward into a interlocking strike bracket. They prevent an intruder from using a crowbar to pry the door frame away from the door edge.

  • French Doors & Patio Doors: Vertical shackle bolts pin the top and bottom of inactive door panels directly into floor joists and header timbers, creating a rigid structure for the active door to lock against.
