The different types of Garage Doors
The material for the garage door always depends on the type of house, space, and budget. There are four main types of garage doors. Sectional, Roller, Side-hung, and Up-and-Over doors. All these four types of garage doors come in wood, steel, and glass reinforced plastic.
Roller Garage Doors
For those homes that have a short drive and limited space, the roller garage door is the best solution. Roller garage doors roll upwards and therefore avoid the overhangs and upswings. The sectional garage door also allows for flush parking inside the garage but the difference lies in the storage of the door when open.
Overhead Garage Doors
Overhead garage doors are best for bigger garages. These up-and-over garage doors swing outwards then up and parallel to the garage ceiling. The most common models are made from glass reinforced plastic though it is quite easy to get such garage doors made out of wood or steel. Overhead garage doors require a lot of room, both at the ground level and at the top in order to swing freely. In case you have a garage that is big enough to accommodate overhead garage doors then perhaps you would also like to consider the oldest and simplest of all garage doors ever made, the side hung doors. These garage doors are like regular doors that hang on the side and close in the middle.
Wooden Garage Doors
Wooden garage doors look good but then they require a lot more maintenance than other materials and they will also cost more. For that reason wooden garage doors are only recommended for people who do not have to worry about budget or long-term costs.
Steel Garage Door
If security of prime concern then you can do no better than steel garage doors. Remember that a steel garage door in itself will not guarantee more security. There are many other aspects like door frames, windows, and other entrances that will also need to be secured. Nowadays you can have a roller garage door, made of steel and aluminum components.
Glass Garage Doors
Nowadays the most commonly used garage door material is glass reinforced plastic. This material is good for all except side-hung garage doors. It is the cheapest material and can be made to look like glass wood or glossy like metal.
Garage Door Openers
Garage door openers come in two varieties and they are meant to cater to the residential and commercial requirements. The commercial garage door openers are available as trolley, hoist, jack shift, and slide. Trolley garage door openers are used on sectional doors, jack shift model is used for grills and shutters. Hoist garage door openers are for heavy doors that are often use for industrial purposes. Slide garage door openers are use for single and double parting slide doors. Overhead garage doors are equipped with springs to make it easier to lift them. Most of the demand is for wood and steel doors though they are also available in aluminum and fiberglass.
